Boots in the ‘Burg Is Back — And the Woman Behind It Has a Story Worth Hearin’
Now I don’t get down off the mountain much. But when I do, it’s usually ’cause somethin’s stirrin’ in the valley worth payin’ attention to. And this summer, that somethin’ is happenin’ on Broadway Street in Philipsburg.
Boots in the ‘Burg is rollin’ back into town, and if you were anywhere near downtown last year, you already know what I’m talkin’ about. If you weren’t — well, buckle up, ’cause this is the kind of small-town night that sticks with you.
What Is Boots in the ‘Burg?
Boots in the ‘Burg is a free, family-friendly street dance and concert that takes over a stretch of Broadway in downtown Philipsburg. Live music, dancing in the street, food trucks, vendors, and a whole town showin’ up to have a good time together. It’s the kind of event that makes a small town feel like the center of the world for one night.
Last year was its first run. This year, it’s back — and from what I’m hearin’ through the trees, it’s already shapin’ up to be even bigger.
Who’s Behind It: Char Snyder
Here’s somethin’ folks might not know. Boots in the ‘Burg didn’t just show up one day. Somebody built it — from the ground up, in 2025.
That somebody is Char Snyder, founder of Outlaw Marketing and the driving force behind Music in the ‘Burg. She’s the promoter, the organizer, and the one knockin’ on doors to line up sponsors so this thing can happen year after year.
Char’s got a background most folks wouldn’t guess just lookin’ at a concert lineup — military service, law enforcement administration, real estate, and over two decades doing event promotion. But ask her, and she’ll tell you live music and community events are where she found her calling.
Last year was her first season producing concerts on her own. Boots in the ‘Burg was part of that first season — and by her own account, it worked. It actually worked. So this year, she’s doubling down with two full concert events on the calendar for Philipsburg.
That’s the kind of bet on a small town I can respect. I’ve watched plenty of folks talk about “believing in a community.” Char’s the type that backs it up with a budget spreadsheet and a sponsor list.
Why It Matters for Philipsburg
Now I ain’t an economist. I’m a several-hundred-year-old creature who mostly watches from the ridgeline. But even I can see what an event like this does for a town this size.
Events like Boots in the ‘Burg bring people into Philipsburg who might otherwise drive on through. They fill up the bars, the restaurants, the hotels. They give local businesses a reason to sponsor something and get their name in front of a crowd. And they give the town itself a night to just—be itself, loud and proud, in the street.
I’ve sat up on the hillside above town more nights than I can count, watchin’ the lights and listenin’ to the music driftin’ up through the pines. There’s somethin’ about a whole town turnin’ out for a street dance that you don’t get from a regular Tuesday night. Everybody’s there. Everybody’s got a reason to smile.
A Bigfoot’s Take on Last Year
Now I wasn’t down there mingling with the crowd — that tends to cause a stir I don’t need. But I was close enough last year to hear the music carryin’ up the canyon, and close enough to hear the chatter the next day at the trailheads. Folks were still talkin’ about it days later. That’s usually how you know somethin’ landed right.
I did have one moment, though. Standin’ at the treeline above town, watchin’ the crowd, I caught myself tappin’ my foot to the beat. A seven-foot bigfoot, tappin’ his foot to a country band from half a mile up a mountain. If anybody’d seen that, I’d never have lived it down.
What to Expect This Year
Boots in the ‘Burg returns to Broadway Street in downtown Philipsburg, with live music, street dancing, food, and vendors — all free to attend. Exact date and lineup details are posted on the official event site, so check there for the latest before you make the trip.
If you’re plannin’ a Montana summer trip and want to catch a piece of real small-town life, this is the kind of night you build a weekend around.
Why Char’s Story Is Worth Tellin’
There’s a lot of folks who’ll say they support their community. Fewer who’ll put their own time, money, and reputation on the line to build somethin’ from scratch for it. Char did that with Boots in the ‘Burg — took an idea, made it real, and turned it into somethin’ Philipsburg now looks forward to every summer.
Whether you’re comin’ for the music, the dancing, or just to see what all the fuss is about, you’re also showin’ up for somebody who bet on this town. That’s worth knowin’.
